Deadline September 30 Story Screen and The Fullerton are partnering on a mini film festival for Archtober in Newburgh, NY. During the first weekend of October, we'll be exploring themes of urbanism, preservation, architecture, and more. We are issuing an open call for short films or documentaries to be featured. Content of films can fall into two categories: either urbanism or the Hudson Valley as a whole. Themes can explore personal history, arts, culture, science, and democracy/civics. Filmmakers do not need to be residing in the Hudson Valley to qualify for entry into the festival.

How can we as community members use the written word to address pressing social issues? On November 3, 2022, The Fullerton will host author Kavita Das, author of Craft and Conscience: How to Write About Social Issues. Kavita will lead the group in a book talk, discussion, and writing exercises about exploring our individual motivations for writing about social issues.

This event will take place from 6pm to 8pm at Newburgh Art Supply.

How do Main Streets contribute to our mental health? On Thursday, October 27 2022 social psychiatrist and author Dr. Mindy Thompson Fullilove will discuss her recent book, Main Street: How a City's Heart Connects Us All.

This event will begin with a group walking tour down Broadway at 5pm followed by a virtual discussion with Dr. Fullilove at Gritworks at 6pm.

Dr. Melissa Checker (PhD NYU, 2002) serves on the faculties of the PhD Program in Anthropology and Environmental Psychology at the CUNY Graduate Center. She is also the Hagedorn Professor of Urban Studies at Queens College. Her research focuses on the politics of urban sustainability, environmental racism, grassroots activism, and managed retreat. Her book, The Sustainability Myth: Environmental Gentrification and the Politics of Justice was published in 2020 .

This talk will feature local author Steven Higashide, expert on urban transit and author of Better Buses, Better Cities. Steven’s work synthesizes the need for improved public transit with its effect on the environment, human rights, participation in democracy, and accessibility to jobs and healthcare. (2022)

Newburgh Arts and Cultural Commission is a resident-led advisory group to the City of Newburgh. Together with NACC and other community partners, we are pursuing the Newburgh Arts + Cultural Study—the city’s first survey to inventory and assess our diverse arts-and-culture ecology in Newburgh, NY.

The Frederick Douglass in Newburgh Project together with Newburgh LGBTQ Center, will start a reading series in January 2020. Lasting six sessions, facilitator(s) and participants will explore the work of Audre Lorde using Lorde’s poems, essays, and excerpts.

Inspired by Newburgh's vibrant cultural heritage, rich church communities, and Resistance Revival Chorus , we are organizing Newburgh Peoples Chorus, a community-based chorus project. This chorus is an action of remembrance, solidarity, and empathy through music.

Urban Archive is a location-based mobile platform that empowers New Yorkers to learn about history where it happened. Newburgh is the first city in the Hudson Valley region to digitize its archives to the platform.
