History Revealed: Newburgh Suffragettes

NewburghSuffragettes.jpg

In 1895, Newburgh hosted the Suffragette Convention which marked a transition in leadership and continued the momentum for women obtaining the right to vote until November 6, 1917. What is the legacy of this struggle and what does it look like today in Newburgh?

In remembering this seminal convention and the hard work of the women rights movement, the Fullerton Center staged a window-exhibition, produced by The New York State Education Department and the Office of Cultural Education, detailing the history of the women’s rights movement. Exhibition is on view from October 23, 2017 to January 1, 2018 at Community Voices Heard 82 Ann St.

Votes for Women celebrates the centennial of women’s suffrage in New York State and raises public awareness of the struggle for women’s suffrage and equal rights in New York State from 1848 through 1917 when New York State granted women the right to vote. The exhibition will also addresses the nationally significant role of New York State leaders in regards to women’s rights and the feminist movement through the early 21st century.

Each of the women below are notable in their contributions to women’s suffrage and to securing the dignity and humanity of women who have struggled in a world of prejudice and inequality. Their relentless determination and perseverance in elevating the status of women continue to make an impact in New York and throughout the world
