Demystifying the ARC Process

The Architectural Review Commission (ARC) is a certified agent of New York State’s Historic Preservation Office and is charged with protecting and promoting the enhancement of Newburgh's unique architectural wealth by ensuring all applications for exterior modifications within the East End Historic District or the Colonial Terraces Design District comply with established guidelines. This volunteer committee for the City of Newburgh endures as the city moves to the future, it upholds the set guidelines for future generations. Yet it can be challenging for those not in the professional field of building, designing or preserving.

Building on our conversation at Archtober Newburgh 2023, this workshop is for both professionals and the general public to help demystify the ARC process and focus more on the five pain points that are frequently encountered in the bureaucratic process. At this event, you’ll hear a summary of last year’s discussion and ideas, advice from current or past ARC members, hear from other cities about their processes, and participate in the brainstorming happening NOW to make this process more open and successful in Newburgh.  Learn why getting this right will ultimately save YOU money and improve your quality of life in this iconic City.
