Rebuild Newburgh with Minecraft

Founded in 2021, The Newburgh [Minecraft] Project is an interactive video game where users immerse themselves in the City of Newburgh before Urban Renewal destroyed 1,300 buildings in the 1960s and 70s.

Using the Minecraft platform, Ember Beeler has built 450+ buildings and aims to increase the public’s understanding of the buildings lost but also test the intersection of preservation and gaming technology. Few preservation efforts are as unique, interdisciplinary, and participatory as this project. In Ember Beeler, founder of The Newburgh Project own words “ the goal is to educate and inform people from educational, Hudson River Valley and gaming backgrounds alike, encouraging the virtual revitalization of the City of Newburgh”.
