Black and indigenous people of color (BIPOC) entrepreneurs not only face barriers to accessing capital but also the technical knowledge and professional networks that are needed to achieve success in real estate development. That’s why CPC created the ACCESS Incubator to empower emerging developers to succeed. This mini session lead by Lawrence Hammond and Wilhelmena of Community Preservation Corporation, will give a preview of the program and what it means to become a real estate developer.

Lead Abatement & Lime Mortar Repointing Demonstration
Sunday October 8 from 1-3pm at the (New)burgh Porch, 15 S. Johnston Street. Provided by our beloved Hudson Valley House Parts store, join us for a free demonstration of how to safely abate lead paint on windows and also an introduction to lime mortar repointing. The demonstration will provide an introduction to the skills to preserve and restore Newburgh’s historic buildings.
Minecraft x Urban Archive: Digging for Urban Renewal

Minecraft and Urban Archive are vastly different technological platforms but they creatively allow the public to access and learn about City of Newburgh’s history. Both focused on buildings, streets and stories, come learn how your tech skills can be put to use in a collaborative fashion.

On this walk we’ll see how builders and neighbors tried to create the ideal neighborhood overtime, and meet some of the personalities who called the street home.

Building Shells: Building Community Toolkit for Newburgh’s Vacancies
Sunday October 8 at 9am at the (New)burgh Porch, 15 S. Johnston Street. Building Shells: Building Community is a preservation, policy and design project that explores how the community can work collectively to prevent historic buildings from becoming shells, and to use art as a way to reactivate existing building shells to encourage future redevelopment.
Story Screen: The Sixth Section
Saturday October 7 at 6:30pm at 113 Liberty Street, Hanson Realty. The Sixth Section opens a surprising window on immigration in the 21st century. Following a group of Mexican immigrants from the tiny desert town of Boqueron who now work in upstate New York. The Sixth Section is an intimate portrait of how the 'American Dream' is being redefined by today's immigrants.
Latinos in Preservation
Saturday October 7 at 5pm at 113 Liberty Street, Hanson Realty. Part of the Building Shells: Building Community project explored the Latinx leadership and engagement in historic preservation. Through the generosity of a grant, we were able to work with Enrique Silva to better understand historic preservation in Newburgh’s Latino community.
Look! Mira! Walking Tour: William Street
Saturday October 7 at 4pm at the (New)burgh Porch, 15 S. Johnston Street. The William Street walking tour celebrates the under-recognized architectural, historical and social gems of this corridor. The street first opened in the early 19th century to provide access to estates and pastures just on the fringes of what was then the Village of Newburgh. After decades of development the street matured into a rich corridor of European immigrant shops and houses. Stopping at modified buildings, active residences, and a building shell, we’ll learn of stories exemplifying this transition.
Demolition by Neglect: Saving a building in four days
Saturday October 7 at 2pm at 113 Liberty Street, Hanson Realty. Join Johanna Yaun and Joan Porr to hear how individuals and organizations have the power to save historic buildings in Newburgh. We’ll look at efforts to save the historic building at 242 Broadway and early efforts preservation efforts that happened during urban renewal in the 1970s.

Johnston Street walking tour celebrates the under-recognized architectural, historical and social gems of this corridor. The tour will focus on the street’s progression and its beginnings as Newburgh’s first major housing development, fueled by a pressure to urbanize and create new urban corridors.
